The Consortium partners developed a collaborative and effective approach of doing business that encouraged the partners to share resources and best practices, eliminate duplication of efforts, and work collectively to maximize resources for expanded learning programs in San Diego County.
The San Diego Expanded Learning Consortium is comprised of 27 local school districts and 21 charter schools serving more than 31, students in grades K-8 in elementary and middle school programs. Expanded learning programs offer learning opportunities not always available during the traditional school day such as coding, robotics, photography and cooking. Academic support is an important component of expanded learning programs, as well as the integration of enrichment and health to provide a comprehensive program that meets the needs and interests of the students served.
Consortium expanded learning programs successfully reinforce learning by making constructive use of the extended time to offer new and different ways of learning. The initiative also works with community groups to increase community college and university admittance and attendance for low income students.
The initiative provides technical assistance for juvenile diversion, high risk mentoring, gun safety, and truancy prevention. The report card presents trend data on 25 health and well-being indicators that together present a snapshot of our country's health and progress for our children and youth.
In addition to presenting trend and comparative data, the report card presents nationally recognized best practices in prevention and intervention, highlights local progress and efforts, and makes recommendations for action specific to san diego county. By offering a reference of environments and policies that support healthy eating and active living, COAP guides the broader community in reducing and preventing childhood obesity in San Diego County.

The COI has established active workgroups in each of these domains to develop, leverage, and replicate best practices and resources throughout San Diego County.
