Making up for student learning losses may be worse. School boards provide oversight for local education systems, and voters are entrusted with electing the trustees who will influence education in their communities. School boards shape local educational programming and board trustees govern districts with the advice of superintendents, who manage districts via the oversight of trustees through policies and priorities boards adopt, according to the Texas Association of School Boards' website.

They also adopt policies that establish how a school district will generally operate. Trustees in Texas are not paid for board service, but their influence can extend past local school boards. To qualify to run in the upcoming school board elections, candidates must have resided in Texas for 12 months and in the district they are running to represent for six months prior to their filing deadline. What more could be done? We can acknowledge that the situation is fluid, but we are one year in, and parents are anxious.

What is the district doing to assuage our concerns about instruction loss? Where is the plan to address the disparate impacts of the pandemic or the impending mental health crisis our child psychologists have warned us about? These are things that directly impact learning outcomes and that I, as a parent, worry about on a daily basis. I think we have learned some hard lessons on the importance of preemptive planning.

Our guiding principles of trying to keep schools open and safe were met with a continuum of risk that was exacerbated by an overwhelming local COVID crisis many other cities did not experience. Another big lesson we learned is that programs do not replace people. Educational technology works as a supplement and not as a core component of instruction. Our human resources are valuable and we should be aligning these resources to the needs of every student. The former superintendent created a structure where much of the consulting was outsourced.

We need to utilize the personnel we have to work in-house to problem solve for our students and staff, so that resources can be allocated where they are really needed. Are there any departments within the district that you believe need to be reformed?

If so, what are they? If elected, it is important to thoroughly review the organizational structure to ensure coherence between the needs of learning communities and district operations. Following this year of disruption, the issues that we started with may not be the ones that need the most attention.

We must audit everything from the top down to determine what works, what needs to be rethought, and what needs to be changed. It is important that there is a regular schedule of assessment and reporting as part of an ongoing effort to promote accountability.

By involving parents and advocacy groups, we can create a coalition that provides opportunities to mobilize sectors of our organization to work on issues important to us all. The more voices we seek out and hear, the more successful our change efforts will be.

Collins Elementary School. I have much respect for the Principle, he really cares for the students. I have throughtout the year brought up my concerns about students being yelled at instead of redirected in a positive way. Parental involvement is still limited but the potential is there if it is organized right. Overall it has gotten better as the year comes to an end but it has been a long road to get here.

We did a bridal shoot before the big day. It gives it a look you just can't get with digital. As for the big day, she and her assistant were there from when we were getting ready to the grand exit.
